First and foremost, thank you to @piargno84 for the beautiful gift of your cycle Cinque canzoni di refugio. Premiering this work was a huge honour and I am grateful to you and your artistry. Thank you Laurence for playing in my recital for this cycle!

This recital was my last one as a uOttawa student. It was a thank you and a goodbye recital to my five years as a student here. It was also extra special because every piece in this recital was written by a Black composer. Black classical musicians have been doing incredible work for CENTURIES and I really wanted to showcase some of that incredible, diverse and beautiful music.

Thank you @nadiaboucherpianist for being my collaborative pianist, diction prof and vocal coach, I am so grateful for your mentorship!!

My recital will be the world premier of Anthony R. Green’s (@piargno84 ) song cycle Cinque canzoni di rifugio. Anthony took the time to sit down with me on zoom to chat a bit about his compositional process, choice of poetry and how they landed on Grazia Deledda’s poetry for the set. Here is a snippet of our conversation!

As a student, I still have so much to learn about singing, and I feel very grateful that they have trusted me with this work as I continue to hone my musicianship! I am also very grateful to be working with the fantastic @nadiaboucherpianist as my collaborative pianist and Laurence Laforest for this small chamber work.

I have to say that it has been incredibly special to me to be working in collaboration with a Black composer in real time!! It has warmed my heart in ways I didn’t know I needed.

Here is a little more about Anthony!!

The creative output of Anthony R. Green (composer, performer, social justice; he/they, b. 1984) includes musical and visual creations, interpretations of original, contemporary, and repertoire works, collaborations, educational outreach, and more. Behind all their artistic endeavors are the ideals of equality and freedom. Their compositions and projects have been presented in 25+ countries by various internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles. He has performed as a pianist, experimental vocalist, movement artist, improvisor, and performance artist in over 10 countries across 4 continents. He has taught courses and studio lessons at the University of Hartford and the Berlin University of the Arts, and has appeared as a guest lecturer at numerous institutions around the world. Green’s most important social justice work has been with Castle of our Skins: celebrating Black Artistry through Music.

I will be moving back to Montreal near the end of the summer to start a Masters of Music Performance in Opera and Voice at Mcgill! I am so excited and scared and excited!

I am sharing this also to thank everyone who has been part of my journey in Ottawa for the past five years. To all my family and chosen family, friends, colleagues, mentors, professors, thank you for being there for me during this time.

I moved to Ottawa as an incredibly nervous 17 year old girl and over the course of my bachelors and graduate diploma (yes thats right two degrees👩🏽‍🎓💅🏽, I worked hard for them so Imma brag) I have felt constantly immersed in so many beautiful lessons about music, myself and life (still an incredibly nervous girl tho HAHA). Thinking about all the lovely people who have been a part of my time here, I could just cry.

My heart is overflowing with love and gratitude.

I want to take time to give some love particularly to the Black creative community in Ottawa. @horspairsocial is what launched my performances outside of a school setting in the city, and that opened the door for me to meet so many incredible souls. The world is crazy and it’s so easy to feel crushed for so many valid reasons!! But your art matters, and it matters to me, thank you for sharing it.

My graduate diploma recital will be on April 26th at 6pm, so come and celebrate the end of this beautiful chapter with me while we also celebrate a program filled with 275+ years of classical music by Black composers.

While I reflect on community as I prepare for this new transitionary period in my life, I want to also extend all my love and warmest hugs to all the survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi, their families and their loved ones, particularly now in April. #kwibuka32🇷🇼🕯️
