My name is Malaïka Urbani.

My artistic practice explores the depths I can reach when dedicating myself to curiosity, trust, learning, vulnerability, empathy, life, passion and guided mentorship. This is streamlined into my practice as an operatic mezzo-soprano, classical composer, multidisciplinary music producer, singer/songwriter, poet, and writer.

✨She’s a scholar✨

I have a hard time trying to find the words to describe how much this degree has meant to me. I’ve accidentally fallen in love with classical singing, opera and composition; art forms that initially felt untouchable and “too elite” for someone like me. Anchoring myself in the desire to grow and learn as a musician overpowered my imposter syndrome, and I’m honestly really proud of my growth in the past four years. There’s something so special about this art that I can’t seem to get enough of. I’m excited to continue this journey as I start my graduate diploma in the fall at @uottawa (and then masters who knows where👀🤷🏽‍♀️✨)

I want to thank my parents who have been my number one supporters and also finance my studies. I really love school and my heart is full from having this support so that I can continue my studies and pursue my dreams.

School & post-secondary education is still a choice that isn’t accessible to all, especially women globally. My gratitude and desires to learn grow deeper both as a tool for self-development and resistance. Learning can be a beautiful tool for critical thinking in unjust societies and revolutionary innovation.

This bachelor’s has been one of the most beautiful and equally hardest challenges I’ve ever attempted.
I remember looking at the program requirements in my first year and being consumed by the anxiety of everything that was expected of me in my courses and my performances.

The fear never really went away, but lessened drastically even as I set myself to reach higher goals and sing more ambitious repertoire.
The growth I’ve experienced in the past four years is something I’ve only come to recognize once the finish line was baby steps away.

It makes me excited for the next four years. It makes me excited to make a similar video in 2030.

A major celebration of the end of my bachelor's and the release of my song cycle Painted Flowers as an album!!

First and foremost HUGE thank you to @nadiaboucherpianist for being my collaborative pianist and vocal coach!! I have much love and gratitude for you!!

This recital was so much fun and hard work! Big thank you to everyone to came out to watch, I felt very championed!!! (I had planned everything to the tea but I hadn’t even plausibly thought or prepared for a standing ovation, so when everyone got up so my brain went😳😀🤖)
